Sustainability at Fihalhohi Maldives
Simple. Responsible. Environment-Friendly.
At Fihalhohi Maldives, sustainability is more than a commitment — it is part of who we are. Our parent company, Fehi Moorthi (“Green” in Dhivehi), reflects our deep respect for nature and our responsibility to protect it.
Guided by internationally recognized sustainability principles and aligned with Travelife standards, we integrate responsible practices into every aspect of our operations — ensuring that comfort and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
Our Core Commitments
Sustainability in Action
- Energy efficiency and responsible resource management
- Reduced paper use through digital systems
- On-site water production and water conservation measures
- Coral reef protection and marine conservation initiatives
- Coastal and island clean-up programs
- Organic gardening and local sourcing
- Support for sustainable, traditional fishing practices
- Fair employment, staff training, and community engagement
- Active environmental partnerships for waste reduction and reef protection
Smart Energy & Responsible Resource Use
We implement energy-efficient technologies across the resort, including LED lighting, preventive maintenance programs, and monitoring systems to reduce electricity consumption. Water-saving fixtures and operational controls help minimize overall resource use.
Digital systems reduce paper consumption in administration and guest services. Staff training programs and guest awareness initiatives further encourage responsible energy and waste practices.
Waste is carefully segregated, with recycling and reduction strategies in place to minimize landfill impact. Hazardous waste is handled according to environmental safety standards.
Responsible Water Management
Rainwater harvesting and on-site desalination reduce reliance on imported bottled water. Water is purified and provided in reusable glass bottles throughout the resort, including during excursions, significantly reducing single-use plastics.
We actively work to minimize plastic waste and support broader ocean conservation initiatives through meaningful collaborations and responsible recycling programs.
Environmental Partnerships
Collaboration plays a key role in strengthening our sustainability efforts.
We have partnered with Parley Maldives to recycle plastic bottles used at our property. From November 2025 to March 2026, we successfully collected and sent 40 kg of plastic bottles for recycling. This partnership continues as part of our long-term waste reduction and circular economy programme.
We have also partnered with Maldives Resilient Reefs to raise awareness and actively support the protection of coral reefs and marine biodiversity, recognising their critical importance to the Maldives and future generations. Through education and engagement initiatives, we contribute to strengthening reef resilience and conservation efforts nationwide.
Coral Reef Conservation
Our marine team conducts regular reef monitoring and clean-up activities to support healthy coral ecosystems. Guests are invited to participate in educational sessions and conservation activities designed to raise awareness of marine biodiversity and reef protection.
We promote responsible snorkeling and diving practices to prevent coral damage and support long-term reef resilience.
Clean Coasts & Biodiversity Protection
Regular shoreline clean-ups help protect marine life and maintain the natural beauty of our beaches. Native vegetation planting, including coconut saplings, supports erosion control and biodiversity conservation.
Landscaping practices prioritize indigenous plants suited to the island environment, reducing water use and supporting local ecosystems.
Organic Gardens & Sustainable Sourcing
Our island garden produces coconuts, tropical fruits, herbs, and vegetables grown without synthetic pesticides. This reduces food miles and ensures fresh, seasonal ingredients for our culinary offerings.
We prioritize locally sourced products where possible and work with suppliers who demonstrate responsible environmental and social practices, in line with Travelife supply chain standards.
Responsible Fishing Practices
We support traditional Maldivian pole-and-line fishing methods, particularly for tuna, which help minimize bycatch and protect marine ecosystems. Lobster harvesting is conducted in accordance with national regulations to ensure sustainable population levels.
By sourcing responsibly, we contribute to the protection of marine biodiversity while supporting local livelihoods.
Social Responsibility & Ethical Operations
Our sustainability commitment extends beyond environmental initiatives. We ensure:
- Fair wages and equal opportunities for all team members
- Safe and healthy working conditions
- Ongoing sustainability and skills training
- Respect for local culture and heritage
- Community engagement and local employment opportunities
We maintain clear policies on human rights, child protection, anti-discrimination, and ethical business conduct, consistent with Travelife certification requirements.
Continuous Improvement
Sustainability is an ongoing journey. We regularly review our environmental performance, set measurable objectives, and implement improvement plans aligned with internationally recognized responsible tourism standards.
At Fihalhohi Maldives, we believe that true luxury is responsible. Every initiative we undertake reflects our commitment to protecting our island home — today and for generations to come.
We invite our guests to join us in embracing conscious travel and contributing to a more sustainable future.
